Usher, New Look returns to Coast

30 06 2008

BILOXI — Grammy-winning singer and philanthropist Usher Raymond IV, along with his foundation “New Look,” has joined forces with Beau Rivage Resort and Casino and other sponsors to enhance employee quality of life and assist in Gulf Coast rebuilding efforts.

Usher revisited the Gulf Coast in an effort to continue the work he began in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina. On June 26-27, the New Look foundation along with Beau Rivage, Trustmark National Bank and Visions of Hope announced a partnership to offer home replacement and renovation assistance to Mississippi employees who owned homes that were destroyed significantly by Hurricane Katrina. The program is expected to impact between 80 and 100 families.

Administered through Visions of Hope, the Beau Rivage Employee Home Assistance Initiative will also provide homebuyer and financial education, training and counseling to Beau Rivage employees displaced by Katrina.

“Beau Rivage’s Employee Home Assistance Initiative is a pilot ‘no strings attached’ grant program that can be used toward a down payment or closing cost to rebuild or renovate a home,” said George P. Corchis Jr., president and COO of MGM MIRAGE’s Mississippi resorts, which includes Beau Rivage and Gold Strike Casino Resort in Tunica. “Usher was instrumental in bringing this project together, and it truly has been a cross collaboration of partners committed to the Gulf Coast’s recovery.”

Since 2005, New Look has provided support to more than 750 families through rent and utility assistance.

Beau Rivage hosted a special Club Tiki event to benefit Usher’s New Look foundation when Usher was on the Coast. A $10 donation got fans in the door and included a chance to win prizes. All of the proceeds benefited Coast recovery efforts.

While on the Coast, Usher, along with City Year, partnered with Samuel Green Charter School in midtown New Orleans to present a beautification project featuring the school’s edible schoolyard. He ended his time in the area with a tour of Children’s Hospital and a meeting with professionals from the LSU Health Sciences Center and U.S. Doctors for Africa to better understand the healthcare crisis facing youth in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast.

Usher’s new album makes R&B statement

30 06 2008

ATLANTA — The lens on Usher – NBA team co-owner, Broadway star, fragrance endorser, restaurateur – is finally turning back to the music.

Sure, the celebrity gossip still lingers: the years between records found him defending his marriage in public and dealing with an upheaval in his inner circle.

But with the May 27 release of his fifth studio CD, Here I Stand – debuting atop the pop charts this week – the first thing people are asking him about these days is his new album.

And what Usher and the industry powers involved with Here I Stand have to say about it may be some of the most frank, revealing and not altogether flattering talk from and about the Atlanta superstar in his decade-plus in the business. His last CD, Confessions, sold more than 1 million copies in its first seven days in stores – a record first-week for any male R&B artist. It went on to sell more than 9 million copies, making it the bestselling album in 2004.

“I’ve made history,” the 29-year-old says from his hotel room in New York. “Now I want to help save R&B.”

Here I Stand moved 433,000 units its first week out. It’s the second-highest debut on the Billboard charts this year. But in comparison with Confessions, is it a promising sign for an artist out to salvage a genre?

“I don’t think the first week will be the biggest week he’ll have numberswise,” says Mark Pitts of Zomba Label Group.

“It’s just going to take a minute for people to really connect. Once they get past all of the energy of everything else around Usher, they’ll be able to appreciate Here I Stand for what it is. And who Usher is now.”

That’s exactly what the five-time Grammy winner is hoping.

“In time, I think people will understand where I am personally,” Usher says. “And, I know – here we go again – my personal life is my personal space. And it’s good, people! We are in love!

“But back to this album, I’m trying to make sure people get the message that this is real R&B. Real music. Real instruments. Real vocal arrangements. I’m serious about preserving and appreciating R&B.”

Here I Stand, he says, “is a classic piece of work. There’s incredible production from Jermaine Dupri, Tricky and Dream, Polow Da Don, Bryan-Michael Cox, Johnta Austin – all of the best talents in Atlanta. I was very cognizant of wanting to add to the wealth of Atlanta’s music scene.”

“A No. 1 hit record,Love In This Club, featuring Atlanta rapper Young Jeezy; new single, Moving Mountains, is a hot video at MTV’sTRL – yeah, I’m happy about the momentum,” Usher continues.

But some involved with the CD have other things to say about it.

“I think we ran into a bit of a buzz saw with this,” says Christopher Hicks, Usher’s co-manager. “He’s competing with himself at this point. I don’t think anyone can honestly say they listen to Here I Stand with the same level of objectivity that they listened to Confessions.”

Dupri recently told radio listeners he was upset thát “a bunch of my songs” didn’t make the CD, adding: “Usher’s not saying a lot of things people want him to say on this album.”

Da Don goes even further, first to admit that “I probably messed the timing up for everybody by leaking his production Love In This Club. After that, I mean, they had to rush the project.”

Then he adds: “From an Usher fan prospective – which I am – no, I don’t think this is his best album. His vocals are way better than they’ve ever been, undoubtedly; but I am more of a ghetto dude. Not R&B. And the thing about Usher, and I would say, R. Kelly, is that even if you were a guy who listened to rap music all the time, you could still ride to Usher – until this one.”

Usher concedes he’s heard this kind of talk, too. “I read. I listen to the radio. Look at the blogs.”

Outside of personal swipes, what really riles him?

Being called a “rap singer.”

“Not that I don’t like rap or hip-hop,” he explains. “And I really appreciate how the pioneers in hip-hop such as Jermaine Dupri, or a Sean “Puffy” Combs, have shown us how to market music as a lifestyle.

“But give R&B its due. When you sell lots of records, you know, they want to make you a pop artist. Which is great because that’s another way of saying you’re popular or successful and making a lot of money. At the same time you’rechipping away at the essence of R&B, the things that Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles fought for me and my peers to have. Chuck Berry and Nat King Cole didn’t do it the way they did it, only for me to come around and be happy that people call me a ‘rap singer.’ And I’m left with the responsibility to stand up for that. For them.”

That is, in part, why Here I Stand has only a few rappers (Young Jeezy, Jay-Z, Will.I.Am and Lil Wayne) featured on the 18 songs.

“Usher really, really showcases who he has become as a singer,” notes Austin.

USHER EYES MARVIN GAYE BIOPIC

27 06 2008

R+B superstar USHER wants to play the leading role in a biopic of legendary singer MARVIN GAYE.
The Love in This Club hitmaker has already played Gaye once before during a guest-appearance on U.S. television show American Dreams.
And now he is desperate to portray Gaye in a movie version of his life story.
He says, “I want to be the person who tells the story of Marvin Gaye because I understand the conflict he had as a man.”
Unfortunately for the singer, a film about Marvin Gaye’s life is already in production – with former Law + Order star Jesse L. Martin in the lead role.

Michael Jackson Comments on Ne-Yo’s New Tracks Nobody

26 06 2008

Ne-Yo is only on his third album, but already he has established a couple of themes that run through all his work. The R&B singer/songwriter has decided that each album has to have at least one tribute to his first love and one song that pays homage to his musical icon, Michael Jackson.

“Anybody who has been following Ne-Yo from the start knows that I’m a huge, huge Michael Jackson fan,” the singer explained. “And love is one of the few things on the face of this planet that will never go out of style.”

The MJ tribute on Ne-Yo’s forthcoming album Year of the Gentleman, due in August, is called “Nobody.” It’s a club-thumping follow-up to his current single, “Closer.” (Read what Ne-Yo had to say about whether his remix of Lil Wayne’s “A Milli” is a dis of Chris Brown in the MTV Newsroom.)

While “Closer” is about a dancefloor hookup between two strangers, “Nobody” presents a different scenario. “Say she didn’t give you anything, but instead she just started dancing, and it was the most amazing thing you’ve ever seen,” Ne-Yo said. “It’s like she’s untouchable, like it would be a sin to touch her or dance with her, with what’s going on with her right now.”

When Ne-Yo played the track for Jackson, with whom he’s currently working, he got a positive response. “He told me that he likes the way I do Michael Jackson,” Ne-Yo beamed. “I asked him what he meant by that, and he said, ‘When you do that, it doesn’t feel like you’re trying to copy me or trying to be me. It feels like you’re complimenting me.’ And that’s what I’m doing. It means the world that he liked it.”

MJ TO DESIGN CLOTHING LINE: Singer teams with Christian Audigier

26 06 2008

*Michael Jackson is reportedly in the planning stages of creating a new clothing line with his friend, Ed Hardy designer Christian Audigier, that is expected to launch sometime in the fall, reports People.com.

“It’s the merging of the King of Pop with the king of fashion. Something explosive is going to happen,” said Audigier.

The project is currently in the planning stages, but Los Angeles boutique Kitson has already committed to carrying the line – without having seen any of the pieces.

“Michael Jackson is an international pop icon who has had a huge following throughout his career,” said Kitson owner Fraser Ross. “I think people will think it’s hip to wear his line. Through all his ups and downs people still love him. He still has a huge fan base
